LIGHTER THAN AIR: AUSTRALIAN BALLOONING HISTORY

A storied veteran of both the global and Australian hot air ballooning scene, Helene Rogers has been published in Encyclopaedia Britannica, consulted to Australian Geographic magazine and the Aerospace Laboratory, RMIT Melbourne, as well as appearing on the BBC World Series.

I collaborated closely on the book with Helene, and her proof-reader Norma, to create a simple layout with space available to let key quotes and excerpts breathe. Helene agreed we should diverge from her initial draft for the book’s cover and took my offer of an alternative in the form of the wraparound image that eventually went to print. Although her vision was representative of Australian ballooning history, I felt a uniquely Australian photograph would make a strong statement.

The 190 page book features an exhaustive history of Australian hot air ballooning, with 48 pages of full colour images.
